Runner’s Knee, how to get around?
Have chronic runner’s knee and was wondering if anyone else might experience the same, and if so, have any remedies/techniques/stretches/exercises they’d care to share?
Ran the houston marathon in 3:33, but only ran 2-3mi everyday for a month prior to that, so definitely know WHY my right knee gave out the day after. Now trying to get back into the swing of things and want to shoot for a Boston qualifying time.
On that note, anyone in CStat care to train?
Where’s it hurt?
What makes it better?
What makes it worse?
What shoes are you wearing?
Have you had a gait analysis done?
I have no remedy except to stop running.
Just came in here to say that it’s awesome you ran a marathon. lol
It’s the cartilage right under the knee cap. I pulled the patellar tendon and IT bands on both knees and basically walking around a lot back when the injury was fresh, any form of compression from down and above the knee was felt pretty acutely and I had to hobble for about two months before I started running again.
I haven’t run consistently the past couple weeks, but I got down to ~5:30 miles before goin back to default 7min. I run in Oasic Gels.. think XIII’s. Can’t tell off the bad, lot of grass and mud on them. Stability shoes for my flat feet. Gotta run to class, so I can be more detailed later.
running is bad for your joints, our bodies weren’t designed for long distance jogging
Quick burst of speed to escape hungry bears
your telling me you run 2-3 miles a day. Yet you can run 26.2 miles in 3 hours and 33 minutes?
Yes, Pringles. And believe me, I regretted it hardcore for two months of hobbling/wattling lol.

Haha, I know, but after the race I bumped into some 60 year old dude who beat my time by 30 minutes. So that got me pretty motivated to keep this up till I at least hit 60, if at all possible.
former cross country runner here…fuck running…it sucks…
I know, but I’m sure you also know the whole love-hate relationship between runners and running?
at one point in time yes…
then I realized how much I hated it and the lack of tangible reward…so I stopped running and got drunk alot…then I discovered the deadlift…and still drink a lot…

As for running problem… switch to swimming, way better for your body, all your joints supported by water, and you get a full body workout… hell, swimming might even fix the problem, building strength in your legs while giving it time off to heal as apposed to pounding your legs on cement when your running

nice fucking job man. I used to do cross-country and long distance. Just at 6′4" I ate small children for dinner yet I weighed only 155lbs. I got tired of being a twig and now trying to get some weight on me. Would like to run a marathon sometime though.
^^
Previous 6 foot 120lbs runner, loved it but had to give it up, 10" arms were gay
5′11" and 130ish back in the day…
It’s easy to gain weight once you stop running completly and eat all the time. Eat 3-4 large meals a day plus snack all the time.
Can we assume that you’ve seen a sports medicine doctor / orthopedic surgeon about this? They should be able to put you into physical therapy which will also give you some good exercises to do to minimize or avoid further injury.
I did, and they gave me orthotics, and they gave me a list of IT band stretches. Everything else they just said to rest and stretch. I inquired as to getting an x-ray of the soft tissues to see if I had any cartilage damage, but they kept deflecting and suggesting more anti-inflammatory meds. Ironically, the prescription they got for me ended up working pretty lousily compared to over-the-counter Motrin.
A friend of mine who finished second for our club/team behind me ended up getting knee surgery for a torn meniscus (and during those two months my mom also had her menisusc torn and operated on.. go figure). I count myself lucky. It’s just been cropping up again, and I’ve been doing lots of quad-exercises (it’s flat around here) to help.
Wow, I’m a fat runner. 5′8" and 150lbs. I used to way 130lbs but after freshman year, went up to curling 45-50lbs and actually got faster.
Appreciate the attention this post is getting. I’m not a great swimmer, mainly just freestyle. I can do the breast stroke and avoid drowning.
I had this, called patellofemoral pain syndrome, and it fucking hurts.
Solution? Stop running for a month, start back SLOWLY, reevaluate. If it starts hurting again stop and rest. It’s an injury, it has to heal.

Yeah, was the third time I’ve had it. Progressively gets worse. I figure I’d call it by it’s colloquial name since the other tends to get confused stares.
Just don’t want to end up a cripple before I turn 25 (or some other random age >20).
How many times have you had it? Were you able to get back to 100% afterwards?

Hm, I only started running this year. I got it almost immediately after I started really pushing myself, probably pushed too hard. After resting I’m now even better than I was before, it never hurts now.
That being said I have never been nor will I ever be a marathon runner. If you’ve had it 3 times now, you might seriously consider not running so long.
But if you are training on only 2-3 mile runs and then doing a marathon, your training is fucked and is probably a huge reason for getting the injury. You need to train for a maraton for at least 6 months, and more ideally a year. The training isn’t just to build stamina, but to get your body gradually used to that beating.

You may have CMP. It’s the primary reason people have thier knees scoped.
Just got done with clinical orthopedics. I doubt you’ll be a cripple but I’d still see a physical therapist or chiropractor.
Shoot me a PM and I may be able to help over the phone.
