Powerlifters in here? What was your first powerlifting meet like?

Just did the ADFPF Northern IL Nationals in Chicago. To preface the haters… I was 61.2 kg (135 lbs) in the 67.5 class, which I understand is weight

Squat was 80 kg (176 lbs), bench 62.5 kg (137 lbs), and deadlift 150 kg (331 lbs).

Even with my numbers it was exhilarating as fuck. Squat and deadlift were all personal records for me. It’s amazing how much more you can do in front of a crowd of people. Didn’t realize how off my form was for bench… so many stipulations for getting the bar up correctly. Even the guys pushing 400+ lbs made an avg of 1 out of 3 attempts.

anyone can compete in a pl meet, has nothing to do with how big/strong you are
A buddy of mine is weak as shit to F&N standards but always goes to a pl meet whenever the opportunity arises.

is there a website or something everyone uses to find meets? i tried googling but couldn’t find much in los angeles.

My first one is in a bit over a month. Training is going well I’m looking forward to it.
Everyone interested in lifting and strength should do one. Really puts things in perspective and gives you a whole new perspective on training. Except for Ceaze of course who is on some kind of wizard level
Nice work… I did one a few years back and was surprised at the comradery between the guys – It was a lot of fun. My numbers were ok… felt nervous and cut my weight about too much. Glad I did it, but not for me.

that’s the way it works…there i was a tiny weakie newbie bitch. But it didn’t matter. Everyone cheered for me, all these huge guys that were big in the PL game gave me props before and after lifts, etc. Was such a great vibe.

Now I can destroy those numbers raw (whereas then I was in gear) and it doesn’t matter. My first meet was still my best. I had a fucking blast and it completely changed my training perspectives. And 100% of the guys I know that’ve done the same have said the same thing. Never bad feedback.

i’ve only said that because him and I are around the same weight but I can squat a lot more, but can’t pull that much

When I started lifting I weighed about the same and lifted about the same. Keep hitting it hard and eating right. You’ll get stronger.

I’ve played team sports my entire life. Individual competitions do nothing for me. I was bored out of my mind. I don’t care what other people lift, I didn’t want to watch them.

There is A-D. D being the absolute lowest skill level and A being kids who played college hockey and are still in shape.

My first meet I benched 275 @ a bw of 215ish. I was wearing a 2ply denim shirt. LOL
the powerlifters at my old gym were .. the nicest most polite guys ive ever met at a gym and they all looked like Ram Man .. they just pulled so much weight that i always thought there would be no way in hell i could do it
Congrats on competing. I’d be doing a full meet in July but I have the low back of an old man so I may just go to bench so I can finally hit 300+ which has been a long time goal of mine.

To anyone looking to do a meet:
don’t keep waiting until you’re "strong enough". No one gives a fuck what numbers you put up. If you keep waiting for the perfect time you’ll never compete. It’s also a great way to meet powerlifters in your area.
Ralphie, definitely do the Europa, even if bench only. If in a couple weeks your back isn’t feeling better and you’re inclined to just go smash 300+ ramp down your squat and DL training.
